February 2008

Yesterday, I decided to try a recipe out that I’d read about over at Food Blogga. Her recipe for Banana Bread  with toasted coconut and almonds has been haunting me, so I decided to give it a go.  And am I ever grateful I did (as is Forrest).  In fact, our first loaf is almost gone, and having given away our second loaf to some friends, I plan on making it again this afternoon, perhaps with chocolate chips in lieu of toasted almonds. And hopefully, I’ll get some pictures this time before the entire recipe is consumed.

Lately, I’ve found myself in a rather awkward situation and I’m at a loss for what to do about it. For a while, I tried to correct the problem. Then I wondered if correcting the problem exacerbated it, so I ignored the problem. But it seems the more I ignore it, the worse it gets. So today, I tried, yet again, to correct the problem.

Me: Shepherd, looky there!  What’s that?

Shepherd: FUCK!

Me: That’s right, TTTTruck. Tee-Ruck.

Shepherd: Tee-Fuck!

Me: No.. Tee… like, Tuck.

Shepherd: Tuck?

Me: Yes!  Truck!

Shepherd: FUCK!!

Me: (sigh) Truck, that’s right… TTTTruck.

Shepherd: FUCK! FUCK! FUCK!

Me: (note to self) this isn’t helping

Shepherd: FUCKITY! FUCK! BIG FUCK!

Me: (resigning to the fact that my kid curses) Okay, yeah, sure.

In the grocery store, we pass the cereal aisle where he spots a toy truck hanging from one of those junk hangers.

Shepherd: FUCK!!

Me: That’s right you see a TRUCK!

Little Old Lady: (glares at me and possibly thinking to self that I must have the mouth of a sailor)

Shepherd: FUCK! FUCK!! (upset because I won’t give it to him) FUUUUCCCKKK!!!!

Me: Holy Cow, child, will you please learn to say your T’s with TRUCK. It’s TRUCK TRUCK TRUCK TRUCK!!!!

Shepherd: (quietly staring at me, watching me explain)

Me: See?  (holds his hand to my mouth) TAH.  TAH. TAH.

Shepherd: (quiet)

Me: Okay… you got it?

Shepherd:   FUCK!!!

We found a wonderful car to replace the one that was totalled.  A 2000 Honda Civic, 5 speed. It’s wonderfully fun to drive, even if I’ve only ever driven a stick once before in my life. I’ll admit, I’m pretty smug about the fact that I’m pretty good at driving the stick, only have stalled three times, two out of those in our own driveway.

On another note, I have a birthday coming up… one that puts me ever closer to 30 (not that I care, but still, sometimes it’s hard to believe that I’m actually turning 27).  When Forrest asked me what I wanted, I told him that I only wanted one thing.  A full day skiing in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina.  I haven’t been skiing in over 6 years.  I love to ski so much… and Forrest and I have never actually been skiing together.  I’m very much looking forward to a full day of fun, a break from the kids, and the cold winter air biting at my nose.  Hopefully I’ll walk away with minimal bruises.

I mentioned back a few weeks ago that I’ve been going to the YMCA.  I’m swimming twice a week, and doing Yoga another two days a week. Since January 1, I’ve lost 14 lbs.  I cannot tell you how happy it makes me to be able to slip into the jeans I haven’t worn since before Shepherd was born.  Not only so, but I’m getting so many complements from friends about how much I’ve lost, it’s wonderful!  Beyond the weight loss, I’m feeling so much better just knowing how much healthier I am. I’m sleeping better, feeling better, and all around… I’m being nicer to myself. Let’s just hope that this keeps up!
